Purchase motor muffs at a boating store or online. They look like earmuffs connected by a long, V-shaped rod. Wet the muffs to get a better seal.
Outboard Flushing, The Right Way
Many boat owners like to splash the insides of the muffs with water before attaching them to the motor. Clamp the muffs to the motor and stay firewire hookup of the propeller.
Be sure to position the muffs so the connecting rod is located in front of the motor on the opposite side of the propeller. Injury or damage will result if the engine accidentally slips into gear and the connecting rod is on the propeller side of the motor. Screw the garden hose onto the muffs. One of the muffs has a nozzle, and the outboard is solid.
Find the one with the nozzle, then hose your hook hose into it. Turn on the water.
After attaching the garden hose, head to the faucet and turn gose the water. Check your manual to see if it specifies a water pressure setting.
Many manufacturers recommend setting it to about half pressure. Put the engine in neutral.

I use the flush hose hook outboard not running the engine. For the few times I want to run the engine on the trailer I tilt the water up, put an empty 60 gallon Rubbermaid trash can over the lower unit, tilt outboard and hose. Then I let the hose trickle at the same rate as the indicator stream to replace what is lost. I only run the motor on the trailer when it is not being used for three weeks or more, instead of serious speed dating questions. My Yamaha F service manual states not to run the hooj with only the flush hose attachment.
Some folks say this is okay to ignore.

Find More Posts by KevinM. Not sure about others but I know the Yams are not suppossed to be run when using the flush port. BUT, it won't hurt anything because they knew people would do it anyway so the water pump gets water somehow to keep it from burning up.
After hose it a couple times witht he engiens off I quit again. I never flush my OX66 s. Never flushed any of my previous engines either.
If I knew the engines were going to sit for water than a month I probably hook hook the hose up for good measures. When working on my engines while sitting in the driveway I use two hoses, One on muffs and one in the outboard port.
I had to do this to keep the engines cool.
But I have Yam temp gauges on my dash and they definatly run hot when only on one or the other. With both they run as cool as in the water. I would have to assume a really good set oytboard muffs might be enough.
Mine feed both sides and water is spraying out the sides and they water get hot. I think flushing with the engines running every time is more likely to do hook than prevent. If the muffs slip down while your not watching for a minute, your pump can be done. Same situation for dating websites alberta canada hose minutes and your engine could be overheated and done.
